Getting started: set up your book in ten minutes.

Before the first interview question, we ask six short things about your book. Here's what each one means and how to answer it.

1. Book type

Pick the closest fit: memoir, family history, business, how-to, self-help, devotional or a story collection. Then choose a length — short, standard or full length — and a working title. You can change all of it later.

Not sure about a title? Tick “Suggest some titles for me” and decide later.

2. Genre

Three linked menus narrow down where your book would sit in a bookstore. If nothing fits, choose “Other” and describe it in your own words. This helps us ask the right questions.

3. Reader

Picture one real person you'd hand this book to. Tell us who they are, what's going on in their life, and what should be different for them after reading.

4. Topics

  • Tap suggested topics, or add your own.
  • Mark each one “Must cover” or “Nice to have”.
  • Add anything off-limits — we will never ask about it or write it.
  • Choose how to handle the names of real people.

5. Voice and tone

Choose who's telling the story (“I”, “we” or “you”), then move the sliders: serious or light, gentle or straight-talking, story-led or step-by-step. Record a two-minute sample of yourself talking about anything, so your chapters sound like you.

6. Goals and extras

Tell us what you want the book to do for you and when you'd like to finish. We work out how many questions a day gets you there and send a friendly reminder. Add extras like reflection questions or checklists, and pick how long each sitting lasts.

Review your outline

When you finish, we build your outline: chapters, in order, each with its own questions. Rename, reorder or remove anything — it's a starting plan, not a rule.

On every step, “Not sure? Suggest for me” fills in a sensible answer you can adjust.
